care and service to the aging population of central Ohio.
Our History
 Isabelle Ridgway has a rich heritage from its humble beginnings on September 15, 1912 as the “Old Folks Home” to its current stage of evolution as Isabelle Ridgway Care Center. Ninety plus years ago, a loving, conscientious woman by the name of Isabelle Ridgway recognized the need to provide a place where the elderly in her community could live in comfort and have privacy, companionship and care. Today, Mrs. Isabelle’s legacy is yet a reality.
Isabelle Ridgway Care Center (IRCC), located at 1520 Hawthorne Avenue,
Columbus, OH, is a not-for-profit, community owned and operated
long term care center that is considered to be a “cornerstone” on the near
eastside of Columbus. The 100 bed center is the out growth of the “Old Folks
Home” that
was incorporated March 30, 1916. The corporate name was changed
three times: “Ridgway
Home for the Aged” in January 29, 1959, “Isabelle Ridgway Nursing Center” in
January 23, 1980 and finally to “Isabelle Ridgway Care Center” in August
29, 2002.
Isabelle Ridgway Care Center is certified to provide Medicare and Medicaid Services. Approximately 97% of the Center’s residents are on Medicaid. Ninety-eight percent are African American. The average age is 80 and 78% percent of the population is female while 22% is male.
Isabelle Ridgway Care Center is governed by an fifteen member Board
of Trustees representing various segment of the community and is
a major EEO employer.
The Center employs approximately 130 professional and resident
centered employees to carry out the daily operations of the organization.
Services provided by the Center include nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietary services, social services, housekeeping and laundry services, maintenance, adult day services, therapeutic recreation, transportation and outreach services.
Isabelle Ridgway’s success through the years can be contributed to its volunteer and community support. Religious, inter-generation, senior companion and other programs are offered through volunteer services. A host of groups, organizations and individuals from local churches, businesses, fraternities, sororities and service organizations provide contributions and services hours that are immeasurable.
As pioneers of aging and aging issues, Isabelle Ridgway is sensitive to the needs of the low income and indigent elderly, especially minority. Therefore the Center is noted for being an advocate on behalf of these individuals.
The expertise, talent and skills of the staff are utilized to serve on boards and committees of local, state and national affiliate organizations. State and federal legislation and other information relevant to the elderly are monitored on an on-going basis. In turn this information is presented during in-house or community based programs, workshops or seminars, produced and directed by the Center for the express purposes of educating the community.
The wide range of services and programs captioned above, combined with the essence of heritage which has been passed on from generation to generation is what makes Isabelle Ridgway special. Since its beginning, Isabelle Ridgway Care Center has been committed and dedicated to meeting the needs of the special people it serves.
